String guide

String, gauge, tension. What each one changes.

The string sets the ceiling for comfort, spin and durability. Gauge and tension fine-tune it. Your racquet does the rest.

GaugeThinner is livelier. Thicker lasts.

1.20 mm grips the ball and feels lively, but breaks sooner. 1.30 mm gives up a little response for real durability. Most players land on 1.25 mm.

TensionLower is power. Higher is control.

A looser bed is a trampoline: more depth, more comfort. A tighter bed is a board: more precision, more work for your arm. Polyester goes in at 18 to 20 kg, never above 22. Multifilament and synthetic gut at 22 to 26 kg.

RacquetSame string, different frame.

Head size, string pattern, stiffness and balance all change how a string plays. Tell Kakos your racquet model so the setup fits it.

60°C

Never leave your racquet in the car.

A parked car in the Cyprus sun passes 60°C inside. Polyester can lose several kilos of tension in one afternoon, natural gut can be ruined, and the frame's resin softens. If your racquet spent the summer in the boot, assume the strings are dead.

Signs your strings are done

Your racquet tells you.

  • Mains slide and need straightening between points.
  • The ball leaves with a dull thud instead of a clean ping.
  • Deep notches where mains and crosses meet. A break is close.
  • Balls start flying long with no change in your swing.
  • A new elbow or shoulder niggle. Old polyester is a usual suspect.
How often to restring

Don't wait for it to snap.

Nearly every day, or competingevery 2 to 4 weeks
2 to 3 times a weekevery 1 to 2 months
Once a weekevery 3 months
Now and thentwice a year

Polyester goes dead well before it breaks. If you can't remember your last restring, it's time.

FAQ

Before you drop it off.

Tell Kakos how you play.

Your racquet, your current strings and tension if you know it, and what you'd like to change. That message is worth more than any questionnaire.

Ratings on this page are practical comparative guidance from more than fifteen years of stringing and thousands of racquets. They are not manufacturer-certified laboratory measurements. Prices and stock change; Kakos confirms both on WhatsApp.
